The Hampshire School Chelsea is a Pre-School, Pre-Prep and Prep School in the heart of Chelsea, London, catering for 2 to 13 year-olds under one roof. Small class sizes, averaging 15, provide a personalised education for each child and lay the foundations for their ambitions to be fulfilled.
Founded in 1928 by the actress June Hampshire as a performing arts school, today that tradition is blended seamlessly with academic rigour to produce well-rounded children. This holistic approach to learning is achieved through a broad and rigorous curriculum which challenges pupils to search for knowledge, learn new skills and develop a growing awareness of their capabilities.
The school’s ethos is Alte Spectemus, reflecting a commitment to high aspirations where academic excellence and personal wellbeing are valued. Leavers’ destinations in 2020 included City of London Boys, St Paul’s Boys, Charterhouse, Radley, Francis Holland, Caterham and Emanuel. What is more, children arriving at the school not speaking English have successfully gained places at top selective senior schools - that’s a success story.
All pupils progressed to their future first choice school at 11+ and 13+ as a result of an enriched curriculum, academic rigour, personalised support for all pupils and regular informative communication with parents.
Teachers’ efficacy and the broad curriculum are spoken of by parents very highly. The pupils achieve the Early Learning Goals in Reception. This success is witnessed across the school at 7+, 11+ and 13+.
The school’s five Core Values of resilience, respect, responsibility, community and excellence provide the scaffolding for our children to develop these key life skills and strive for personal fulfilment and high standards.
The school has a Growth Mindset approach to learning to teach resilience in learning. “There is no such thing as ‘I can’t do it,’ just that, ‘I can’t do it yet,’ ” says headteacher Dr Edmonds. This ethos encourages every pupil to build the confidence to succeed.
Rigour in the academic curriculum is a major focus, with robust tracking of attainment across all subjects. The Inspire Maths approach has been implemented based on a leading maths mastery programme to maximise outcomes for pupils.
Meticulous preparation is given to pupils for secondary school transition including digital online adaptive programmes and a curriculum that is both broad and deep in content to push beyond the boundaries of the national curriculum. The Head helps parents on a one-to-one basis and has authored and published a booklet on the transition process as an essential guide for parents.
Being located in the centre of London, in a beautiful Grade 11 listed building, provides a wonderful mix of local and international families. Cultural diversity is embedded and encourages a global outlook. The school’s cohort includes patronage from the British Royal family.
Art, sports and music are key aspects of the curriculum together with an extensive extra curricular programme of activities with over 40 clubs including: 11+ and 13+ English and maths preparation, fencing, football, netball, ballet (provided by The Chelsea Ballet School), jiu jitsu, chess, LAMDA and more.
A high level of pastoral care means that each child is highly supported and valued with wellbeing at the heart of everything the school does. Pupils develop self-esteem, resilience and their own identity while developing a love of learning during their time at The Hampshire School Chelsea.
The quality of educational provision is provided by highly qualified, committed teachers who go the extra mile to maximise pupils’ outcomes. Specialist Teaching Assistants support learning in all classes up to Year 3.
Any child joining the school will enjoy an enriched curriculum and an exceptional learning journey, allowing them to develop key life skills and strive for personal fulfilment.
A warm welcome awaits.
